synonyms: Tested as S-5-4. The varietal name can also refer to an American heritage apple called Spencer . In addition. the Hartford , Hightop Sweet and Spencer Seedless are sometimes called Spencer.
summary: A very sweet and juicy apple with plenty of cold hardiness, bred in Canada for both commercial and hobby orchards.
identification: Medium to large size, cylindrical sometimes tending to conic and slightly ribbed. The background colour is yellow which is washed with bright red and flushed with orange highlights. Marked with abundant light-coloured dots on the washed face. Some russet at the stem.
characteristics: The flesh is greenish white, fine-grained, firm and crisp. Juicy, very sweet, sprightly with honeyed flavours.
uses: A good fresh eating apple.
origins: Developed in 1926 by R.C. Palmer at the Dominion Experimental Farm (now called the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre) in Summerland, British Columbia (Canada) by crossing a McIntosh with Golden Delicious . Released in 1959 and named in honour of Spencer Dyson who worked at orchard foreman at the Summerland facility during the time the apple was being developed.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading tree. Bears fruit on spurs. Slow to start bearing, but when it does, it produces good crops annually. Tolerates Hardiness Zones 3 to 8.
cold storage: Keeps four months in storage, but the fruit tends to break down badly toward the end of this period.
