In addition, Spencer's Sweeting, often simply shortened to Spencer, is a synonym for Hartford . Spencer's Early, a synonym for Hightop Sweet , is often called Spencer's. Another varietal — Spencer Seedless — is also often referred to as Spencer.
origins: Gayle Volk and Adam Henk state in a paper titled "Historic American Apple Cultivars: Identification and Availability" published in 2016 in the "Journal of the American Society for Horticultural Science" that the apple originated in the United States sometime around 1782. W. H. Ragan, in "Nomenclature of the Apple," published in 1905 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, states that this apple likely originated in Missouri (U.S.A.).
