synonyms: Early Sweet, High Top Sweeting, Spence's Early Summer Sweet, Sweet June, Yellow Sweet June. Also sometmes referred to by the shortened Spence's or Spencer's; the latter can also refer to Spencer , Hartford , Spencer and Spencer Seedless .
identification: Small to medium. Round, sometimes with angular faces. Skin is smooth, green yellow with faint blushes of pink or bronze on the sun exposed face. Abundant dark lenticels. The stem is moderately long set in a deep and narrow, russeted cavity. The calyxe is closed and set in a shallow, pleated basin.
characteristics: The flesh is yellow, tender and dry. Very sweet. Does not keep well.
uses: Dessert apple, also makes great dried apple rings. Also used for apple pies and tarts.
origins: a very old American apple having originated in the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts (USA) in the mid 1600s
cultivation: Vigorous. Ready for harvest starting in the first half of the fourth period. The tree typically tries to grow long trunk before branching out, hence its name Hightop.
ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
