Spencer Seedless

Spencer Seedless
synonyms: Often called Spencer's which is the varietal name for Spencer as well as Spencer . In addition, Spencer's Early (also known as Spence's Early) is a synonym for the Hightop Sweet is often shortened to Spencer. Spencer Seedless is sometimes shortened to Spencer.
identification: Very large. Round to round conic. The base colour is green over which is a dull reddish wash marked profusely with light-coloured spots. The calyx is very large and open, set in a wide basin. The stem is very short and slender, set in a medium deep cavity which is surrounded by a network of russeting.
characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured, firm. Somewhat dry, sweet but the flavour is not generally considered good.
origins: Developed in the late 1800s by John F. Spencer of Grand Junction, Colorado (U.S.A.) in an attempt to produce truly seedless apples. While the tree does grow buds, but these generally open to reveal no petals and only traces of pollen at best. Propagation is restricted entirely to grafting. Introduced in 1905.
