identification: Small to medium, round to round-flattened. Ribbed and crowned. The skin base colour is yellowish green, blushed up to 70% with red striping and flushes. Lenticels are abundant, moderately large and russetted. The calyx is closed, sometimes partially open and medium sized, set in a wide and somewhat shallow basin which is surrounded by a pronounced crown. The stem is slender, short and set in a deep, funnel shaped and lightly russetted cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured, moderately firm, fine-grained, Very juicy, sweet-tart with a pronounced pineapple flavour and spicy. High Vitamin C content.
uses: Dual purpose apple which typically eaten fresh, but also used for cooking and cider.
origins: Raised by Dietrich Uhlhorn Jr. of Grevenbroich in Germany's Rhineland during the early 1880s from a cross of
Ananas Reinette and
Ribston Pippin . Named for Hans Hermann Freiherr von Berlepsch, president of the Rhineland regional governing council at the time. Ulhorn also originated the
von Zuccalmaglios Renette and the
Ernst Bosch cultivars.
cultivation: Vigorous when young, but once full-grown it is only moderately vigorous. Upright, round, spreading spur bearer. Moderately productive and tends to produce crops on biennial basis. Prefers a well-drained, fertile loam and a somewhat warm location. Premature fruit drop is likely during drought conditions. Sensitive to sulfur and copper. Sensitive to late frosts.
cold storage: Best after one month in storage but keeps up to four months with no loss of flavour or texture.
vulnerabilities: Susceptible to canker. Highly susceptible to fireblight.
harvest: Ready for harvest in the middle of the fifth period. Late harvested apples have the best flavours, early harvest apples keep better.
notes: Very high Vitamin C content 23.4 mg per 100 grams.
