Ananas Reinette

synonyms: Ananas, Ananas Renette, Pineapple Reinette, Goldapfel, Kindbetter. Note that the Ananas Rouge and the Cloche are also referred to as Ananas.
identification: Small, round conic, often lopsided. The skin is green maturing to yellow, usually with no discernable blush. Profusely speckled with large russet lenticels. A medium long, slender stem is set in a medium deep, narrow cavity which is lined with a scaly russeting. The calyx is prominent, open and in a shallow, open basin.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, fine grained, crisp. Sweet-sharp. Its signature pineapple flavour becomes more pronounced in storage. Rich in Vitamin C.
uses: Dessert, also favoured for juice and apple pies.
origins: First recorded in Netherlands in 1821.
cultivation: Weak to moderately vigorous, upright spur bearer which tends to be dwarfed. Slow to bear first fruit but produces annually thereafter. Blossoms abundantly and needs to be thinned at fruit set to achieve fruit size. Perfect for gardens or farmgate sales. Also does well with espalier training. Requires rich, well drained and well fertilized soil
cold storage: Keeps four months but needs three to four weeks to ripen fully. Do not store at less than 3 degrees.
