identification: Medium size, round to oblate. The skin is rough textured from the russet lenticels and patches. The base colour is yellow to golden yellow, blushed brownish red on the sun exposed face. The calyx is small and partly open, set in a somewhat deep, narrow basin which is surrounded by a patch of russet. The stem is medium length, slender and set in a medium deep, narrow cavity which is surrounded by russet.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish to cream coloured, fine-grained and firm. Juicy and sweet, with strawberry, pear and quince flavours.
origins: Raised by Diedrich Uhlhorn Jr., of Grevenbroich, Rhineland (Germany) in 1878 from a cross of
Ananas Reinette and
Purpurroter Agatapfel . He named the apple in honour of his father-in-law, author and legal counsel Vinzenz Jakob von Zuccalmaglio.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous. Produces heavy harvests and needs to be thinned at fruit set. Annual crops.
