Rafzubin
type: Dessert, Pie
synonyms: Marketed as Rubinette. Sometimes referred to as Red Rubinette or Rubinette Rosso but this is actually the name given to Razubex which is a mutation of the Rafzubin.
summary: A cross of two excellent tasting apples -- the Cox's Orange Pippin and the Golden Delicious -- the Rafzubin is well suited for market sales, U-picks and farm-gate sales and does well for hobby orchards and espalier training.
identification: Small to medium size and slightly conic. Golden yellow to light orange base colour over which are darker orange and red broken stripes. Smooth and shiny with abundant small, light-coloured spots. The calyx is medium size and partly open with long, pointed petals, set in a shallow, wide and puckered basin. The stem is long to very long, slender and set in a medium deep base which is lightly russetted.
characteristics: Flesh is distinctly cream coloured. The texture is fine-grained, crisp. Juicy, flavourful, refreshing, with good sweet-sharp balance. Very similar to its Cox parentage.
origins: Developed by Walter Hauenstein in Rafz, Canton Zurich, Switzerland, in 1966 by crossing a
Golden Delicious with pollen from a
Cox’s Orange Pippin . Released following a series of selections of grafted stock in 1976.
cultivation: Compact and spreading shape. Spur bearer. Tends to be difficult to grow because of low vigor and slow growth. Fruit is small on young trees and trees on which the bloom is not heavily thinned. Graft it on a vigorous root stock like MM106 for improved growth. Well suited for espalier training but requires regular pruning.
cold storage: Keeps for about a month.
vulnerabilities: Prone to fire blight, powdery mildew and scab.
