identification: Small tending to medium, round-conic apple. Yellow skin, turning to golden when fully ripe. some russet dots around the stem cavity. Sometimes a brownish blush can be seen on the sun-exposed side. The stem is long and medium stout, set in a funnel-shaped cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is white and crisp. Very sweet and nutty flavour with distinct hints of honey, pear and cinnamon. Anise flavours develop the longer it hangs on the tree. Well-defined, lingering aftertaste.
uses: Wonderful eaten fresh, but also excellent for apple sauce, pies and in salads.
origins: Created in 1934 by James Hutton Kidd in the Wairarapa Valley of New Zealand and and introduced in 1958 when it was named in honour of Lord Freyberg, Governor General of New Zealand from 1946 to 1952. Created by crossing a Golden Delicious and a Cox's Orange Pippin.
cultivation: Weakly vigorous. Upright spreading, spur bearer. Good cropper.
cold storage: Does not keep long after picking.
vulnerabilities: Prone to scab.
harvest: By the middle of the fifth period, but it tends to hang well after ripening and can be picked over a t week span.
ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
