Cripps Red

synonyms: Sundown. Roughly 10 percent of the Cripps Red apple harvest that meets a set of high standards are set aside to be sold under the trademarked brand name Sundowner. Also known as Joya in the European marketplace.
summary: Great for both fresh eating and baking, this Australian apple originates from a cross of Lady Williams and Golden Delicious carried out in 1973.
identification: Medium size, depending on amount of thinning practiced. Oblong conical in shape, sometimes square. Base colour of the skin is yellowish-green with crimson stripes. Lenticels tend to be large, whitish and abundant. Some russeting in the stem basin and onto the shoulder. The stem is long and slender, set in a deep but moderately open basin.
characteristics: The flesh is firm, crisp texture, medium grained and tangy. Juicy and aromatic. Resists browning when exposed to air.
origins: Developed in 1973 along with the
Cripps Pink and
Cripps Two by John Cripps at Western Australia's Stoneville Horticultural Research Station by crossing a
Golden Delicious and
Lady Williams . It was subsequently tested and selected at the Manjiump Horticultural Research Centre during 1989 and 1990 and released in 1993 with the trade name of Sundowner.
cultivation: Very vigorous, spreading tree. Sets fruit on one- and two-year growth, bearing on both spurs and shoots. Precocious and tends to crop heavily, needing heavy thinning for normal size fruit. Biennial unless flowers are thinned heavily. Needs long, warm summers to ripen and has a low chill requirement.
cold storage: Lasts up to six months in cold storage, up to four weeks at room temperature, becoming sweeter with storage.
vulnerabilities: Resistant to mildew, but can suffer from magnesium deficiency.
