identification: Medium tending to large, round conic and glossy. The base colour is greenish-yellow, over which are reddish stripes covering 80 per cent of the surface. The stem is medium long and medium stout, set in a deep and funnel shaped cavity. The calyx is closed and set in a wide and somewhat deep basin. Skin is lightly greasy. Lightly russeted at the stem cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured, moderately fine-grained. Crisp, somewhat juicy, sweet and tangy. Browns slowly when exposed to air.
origins: One of several seedlings developed from a cross of
Golden Delicious and
Lady Williams in 1973 by John Cripps, who was at the time Senior Research Officer at the Western Australia Department of Agriculture's Stoneville Horticultural Research Centre in Western Australia. It first fruited in 1979 and, along with the two with two other sets of seedlings -- the Cripps Red and the Cripps Pink -- was released in 1986.
cultivation: Vigorous, medium to large and spreading tree, dense. Precocious. Grows fruit on both spurs and tips. Bears annual harvests. Low chill requirements. Needs 400 hours or less of temperatures below seven degrees C. Flowers early, two weeks before Golden Delicious and peaks after Golden Delicious. Resistant to sun burn.
