Co-op 8
type: Dessert
summary: One of about 50 apple cultivars developed under the PRI (Purdue University, Rutgers University and the University of Illinois) programme using Malus floribunda 821 to develop apple varieties that are genetically resistant to scab. Released in 1972 but rated as somewhat bland in flavour.
identification: Medium to large, round to round-conic. The base colour is pale yellow, washed up to about 85% bright red.
characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured, medium-grained, crisp. Juicy, sweet with slight tartness.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, spreading tree with right-angle crotches. Moderate annual harvests but requires thinning after fruit set.
cold storage: Does not store well.
vulnerabilities: Immune to scab, highly resistant to cedar apple rust, resistant to powdery mildew and somewhat resistant to fire blight.
harvest: Ready for harvest late in the fourth period, beginning of the fifth. Fruit tends to drop as soon as it is ripe.
notes: Initially discarded because of many problems with the cultivar, particularly in low winter chill requirement. However, it seems to do well in South America and was resurrected for further testing in low to moderate chill requirement.
pollination group: D
pollination peak: 14
ploidism: Diploid. Self sterile.
