identification: Medium, often large size and conic in shape. The skin base colour is light yellowish green, over which are extensive dark red broken stripes covering a pink red wash.
characteristics: The white flesh is tender and soft. Juicy and slightly tart with bland flavours. Keeps less than a week in cold storage.
uses: Sometimes eaten fresh, but mostly used for cooking.
origins: A seedling from a Yellow Transparent raised by C.P. Close at the US Department of AgricultureÕs Arlington Experimental Farm in Arlington, Virginian (USA) and introduced in1938.
cultivation: Vigorous, upright spreading tree. Bears fruit on spurs. Hardy. Ripens about three weeks before the first first period, sometimes earlier and tends to mature over several weeks requiring several pickings. The fruit tends to drop earl and also has a tendancy to drip. Very susceptible to blight. Tolerant of hot climates, but needs winter chill to cycle properly.
