summary: One of about 50 apple cultivars developed under the PRI (Purdue University, Rutgers University and the University of Illinois) programme using Malus floribunda 821 to develop apple varieties that are genetically resistant to scab.
identification: Medium size. Round to slightly oblate. The skin is glossy and thick, base colour is yellow which is almost completely washed with red, though some base colour shows through on the shaded face. Scattered, indented, small lenticels.The stem is short and thick, set in a deep and narrow cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is pale yellow, crisp, firm and fine-grained. Juicy, sweet, sprightly and aromatic.
uses: Primarily a fresh eating apple.
origins: Developed in 1965 at the Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station at the Urbana-Champaign campus, Illinois (U.S.A.), from a complicated breeding strategy that includes Golden Delicious , Jonathan , Gallia Beauty , Red Spy , Rome Beauty and Malus floribunda 821. Released in 1979.
cultivation: Hardy, vigorous, upright spreading tree. Limb bearer. Starts to bear quite young. Produces annually but needs to be thinned aggressively after fruit set to obtain the prescribed size and flavour. Tolerates Hardiness Zones 4 to 8.
cold storage: Keeps up to two months in cold storage.
vulnerabilities: Resistant to scab and rust, but somewhat susceptible to mildew and blight. Prone to bitter pit.
harvest: Ready for harvest in the middle of the fourth period. Hangs well when ripe.
