Akita Gold

identification: Medium size. Conic to long conic. Yellow base colour marked with raised lenticels. The stem long and moderately thick, set in a somewhat deep and wide cavity. The calyx basin is moderately deep and moderately wide, surrounded by a knobbed crown.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish. Fine-grained, crisp and very juicy. Sweet-tart and aromatic with quince flavours.
origins: Developed from a cross of
Golden Delicious with pollen from
Tohoku 7 in 1974 at the Akita Fruit Tree Experiment Station in Japan. In 1975, researchers grew 80 seedlings from the seeds from that cross-breeding and, of these, a selection was top grafted onto
Redgold in 1977. They bore first fruit in 1981 and one tree that most closely reflected the aims of the breeding effort was selected and named Akita Gold. Released in 1990.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, spreading. First fruit set is at three years. Bears fruit on spurs. Capable of fruiting annually.

vulnerabilities: Moderately susceptible to powdery mildew, aphids and most other common problems.
