Yellow Ingestrie

identification: Small, oblong and flattened at both ends. The smooth skin is yellow tending toward golden on the sun-exposed face, sometimes with a pale reddish blush. Abundantly marked with pink lenticels. The calyx is large and open, set in a shallow and wide basin which can be slightly ribbed. The stem is medium length and slender, set in a shallow and funnel shaped cavity. Skin becomes somewhat greasy at maturity.
characteristics: The flesh is yellow, fine-grained, tender. Sweet-sharp, fruity.
uses: Intended as a fresh eating apple.
origins: Created by Thomas Andrew Knight, then president of the London Horticultural Society, in the early 1800s by crossing a Cox’s Orange Pippin (flower parent) and Golden Pippin (pollen parent). The seedlings were raised at Wormsley Grange in Herefordshire (U.K.). Interestingly, Knight planted several seeds from a single fruit, one of which grew yellow fruit while the remainder produced red fruit which was subsequently called Red Ingestrie . The variety was first documented in the March, 1811 edition of "Transactions of the Horticultural Society of London."
