Wheeler's Russet
summary: This russet apple emerged in Britain about two centuries ago. Sweet with a distinct nutty, honey flavours, it is at its best once it has been hit by frost.
identification: Medium, round and lightly ribbed faces. The base colour is greenish yellow, blushed orange on the sun exposed face. Much or most of the apple is covered with a greyish-yellow russet coat.
characteristics: The flesh is cream coloured. crisp, mild, sweet and aromatic. Highly flavoured.
origins: By most accounts, this variety was developed in the mid-1700s by James Wheeler, owner of the Gloucester Nursery and author of "The Botanist's and Gardener s New Dictionary" Gloucestershire (U.K.). However, Robert Hogg contends that the variety was mentioned by Smith and Carpenter at the Brompton Park Nursery in 1717.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading tree. Bears fruit on spurs. Favours sandy loam and continental climates. Fruit hangs well even into winter.
cold storage: Keeps five months in storage, best after two months.
vulnerabilities: Resistant to scab.
harvest: Ready for harvest in the latter half of the fifth period.
notes: Wheeler's Russet is also a synonym for
Acklam Russet , but that is not the same apple.
