identification: Medium tending to small, round and somewhat flattened. The base colour is green tending to yellow with maturity, almost maroon on the sun exposed face and partially covered with a thin grayish russet, which is heaviest where exposed to the sun. The calyx is tight and small set in a moderately shallow basin. The stalk is short and set in a medium cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is white with green tinges. Firm, crisp and juicy, sweet-sharp and very flavourful.
uses: Highly esteemed dessert apple in Victorian England.
origins: First recorded in 1768 as having originated in the village of Acklam, Yorkshire (UK).
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading tree that bears fruit on spurs. It bears annually and is very hardy. This russet is easy to train for espalier. Well suited to dry soils.
