identification: Medium size, round-conic. The base colour is yellow, over which is an extensive, bright reddish-orange blush and is marked with abundant, tan lenticels. The stem is slender, medium length and extends higher than the cavity. The skin is smooth and yellow with minimal bloom on surface. The skin is abundantly marked with lenticels.
characteristics: Crisp and firm. Sweet and juicy, with a touch of tartness, but best kept in storage for several weeks after harvest for best flavour, juiciness and crunch. In the Northern Hemisphere, it approaches prime eating properties after the Christmas season.
origins: This was the first apple released at Washington State University's Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center in Wenatchee. Introduced as a cross of Splendour (Splendour) and Lady Williams (Kidd's D8, a.k.a. Gala), although earlier information suggested that the apple originated from the seeds produced by an open-pollinated Splendour apple in 1994. Released in 2010 and the origin was confirmed by DNA testing. Officially, the apples were relaunched in 2016 under the registered name of Sunrise Magic.
cultivation: Compact, moderately productive. Needs to be thinned after fruit set in order to produce annual harvest. Can become biennial bearing if overcropped.
cold storage: Keeps up to six months in commercial refrigerated storage, up to 12 months in controlled atmosphere storage. For noncommercial storage, these apples can be stored two months or more.
vulnerabilities: Moderately susceptible to powdery mildew and fire blight.
