summary: A commercially grown dessert apple that originated in New Zealand in the mid-1900s
identification: Medium, tending to large. Round with angular sides, sometimes higher on one side than the other. Slightly ribbed. The base colour is yellow over which is a deep red wash. Patches of networked russet. Sparsely marked with light coloured lenticels on the washed surfaces, dark on the shaded surface. The calyx is medium size and closed, set in a medium deep and narrow basin which is surrounded by a five-knobbed crown. The stem is somewhat short and medium weight, set in a deep and narrow cavity. Look for light russeting in and around the stem cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, moderately fine-grained, crisp and firm. Juicy and sweet, developing a honeyed flavour in storage. Thick skinned, but bruises easily.
origins: New Zealand 1946 NFC Developed in 1948 by Charles L. Roberts, Napier (New Zealand). Introduced in 1967. Found as a chance seedling by Charles Roberts of Napier (New Zealand) in 1946 and introduced in 1967 following an extensive series of tests by Dr. Don McKenzie of the New Zealand Fruit Research Orchard in Havelock North in the Hawke’s Bay area of the North Island. It has been suggested that it is a cross between Red Dougherty and Golden Delicious.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous. upright spreading tree. Slow to start producing fruit but bears heavily on an annual basis.
