summary: Developed by crossing Golden Delicious and Jonathon, the Tsugaru reigned as one of the most popular apples in Japan.
identification: Medium size tending to large, Round to round conic. The base colour is yellow, washed red on about 75 per cent of the surface and marked with darker stripes on the sun exposed face. Light coloured lenticels are abundant and slightly raised, giving the surface a rough feel. The eye is medium size and partly open, set in a somewhat deep and narrow basin. The stem is long and slender, set in a deep, and narrow cavity which is russeted with rays extending over the shoulder of the apple.
characteristics: Cream coloured flesh. Firm, moderately crunchy, medium grain. Juicy and very sweet. Depending on growing conditions, the flavour can be somewhat bland. Tends to brown when exposed to air.
uses: Dessert apple. Thanks to their firm, crunchy texture, they can also be used for baking.
origins: Golden Delicious crossed with Jonathan (often listed as Kougyoku which is the Japanese name for the Jonathan). Developed at the Aomori Apple Experiment Station in northern Japan. Released in 1975
