Nevertheless, this bright red crabapple boasts a crisp and somewhat tart character that is appreciated by many growers.
identification: Small tending to medium size. The base colour is rich, yellow over which is a bright red wash that covers the sun-exposed faces. Russeted, raised lenticels are scattered across the surface and are most apparent on the yellow background. The stem is short, stout and clubbed, set in a shallow and somewhat narrow cavity. The calyx is small and open, with long petals, set in a rather narrow and moderately deep, pleated basin.
characteristics: The flesh is white, crisp. Juicy and sweet-tart.
origins: Developed at the East Malling Research Station in Kent (U.K.) from a cross of
Obelisk with pollen from
Falstaff . Selected in 1996 and introduced in 2008.
cultivation: Best grown on MM106 rootstock. Needs pruning to establish and maintain its columnar growth habit.
