synonyms: Sometimes the called Red Falstaff , but this is actually a mutation of the Falstaff.
identification: Medium size, conic and oblong. Smooth yellow skin covered with a red flush and stripes. The stem is long and moderately slender, set in a deep basin.
characteristics: The skin is cream-coloured flesh is sweet, crunchy and juicy. Sweet-sharp at harvest, it mellows in storage, becoming less crunchy and sweeter. Fruity flavour with balanced acidity.
uses: A refreshing dessert apple, also popular as a juicing apple and sometimes used in the making of cider.
origins: Developed by Dr. Frank Alston at the East Malling Research Station in Kent (U.K.) in 1965 by crossing a James Grieve with Golden Delicious . It was introduced under licence in 1986.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading and somewhat weeping. Spur bearer. Crops well on an annual basis and tolerates late frosts.
