summary: Moderately disease-resistant and precocious, this variety produces sweet-tart, flavourful apples annually, but requires considerable care. Best suited to small hobby orchards.
identification: Medium size and pronounced conic shape, often slightly waisted toward the calyx basin. The base colour is yellow over which is a orange to bright red wash and a pattern of darker stripes covering the sun-exposed surface. Light-coloured lenticels are scattered around the eye basin. The calyx is medium to large and closed, set in a shallow and wide basin which is surrounded by a faintly knobbed crown. The stem is short to medium length and medium thickness, set in a deep and somewhat narrow cavity which is heavily russeted. The skin has a rough feel.
characteristics: The flesh is white, coarse-grained and firm. Very hard when tree-ripe, but softens after two months in storage. Juicy and sweet-tart. Highly aromatic.
origins: Developed by the Institut für Obstforschung Dresden-Pillnitz (Germany) by crossing Clivia with pollen from Undine . Released in 1988.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous. Bears first fruit early and then produces moderately heavy crops annually. Needs to be pruned frequently. Well suited for small hobby orchards or gardens.
cold storage: Keeps up to six months, prime after two months in storage.
vulnerabilities: Bred for resistance to scab, powdery mildew and fireblight.
