identification: Medium to large, round to round conic, sometimes round-oblong. Ribbed. The base colour is greenish, washed red and marked with scattered darker stripes on the sun-exposed face. The calyx is small and partly open, set in a medium deep and medium narrow basin. The stem is long and slender, set in a deep and narrow cavity. Sometimes russeted around the stem cavity. Very tough skin.
characteristics: The flesh is white, firm. Very juicy and sweet-tart.

Jonathan raised in the 1930s by Professor M. Schmidt at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute, in Müncheberg (Germany).
cultivation: Pyramidal crown. Requires pruning to maintain fruit size. Starts to bear fruit quite young. Tends to produce best harvests every other year unless pruned heavily. A good source of pollen for surrounding trees. Becomes biennial at maturity if left unpruned. Sensitive to frost.
cold storage: Keeps up to five months, but should be left to mature in storage for about six weeks.
