identification: Medium to large size, round and slightly flattened. Lightly ribbed. The base colour is a light yellow, over which are patches and stripes of red..
characteristics: The flesh is white, fine-grained and crisp. Juicy and sweet-tart. Aromatic.
uses: Primarily a fresh-eating apple, but also used in baking and making blended cider.
origins: Originated in the early 1800s in the same orchard in East Bloomfield, Ontario County, New York (U.S.A.) where Heman Chapin found the Northern Spy . Believed have been grown from pips brought from neighbouring Connecticut (U.S.A.). According to Beach in "The Apples of New York" the Melon was named and marketed as of 1845 by nurserymen Ellwanger & Barry of nearby Rochester.
