synonyms: Ananas, Berliner, Berliner Hasenkopf, Glockenapfel (this name also refers to the cultivar Glockenapfel ), Hasenkopf, Melon, Nun, Nun’s Apple, Prinz, Prinzapfel, Prinzen. Also sometimes called Princesse is a synonym for this variety, but this name actually refers to another apple.
identification: Medium tending to large, Round-long sometimes ellipsoid and slightly ribbed. The base colour is yellow over which is a yellow wash and streaks of red. The sun-exposed face is often blushed red. Some russetting can occur though the skin is normally smooth and glossy.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, fine-grained, tender and firm. Very juicy and sweet, slightly tart. Fruity and rich, with pineapple flavours.

origins: nfc:Originated in Germany. Known in the 1700s. Believed to have originated in Northern Germany in the late 1700s, and listed by Edouard Diehl (Illustriertes Handbuch der Obstkunde, Band 1) in 1859.
cultivation: Favours rich somewhat moist soils and does well in coastal climates. Lends itself to espalier and other training approaches. On its own roots, the tree forms a high, round crown.
cold storage: Needs about a month to fully mature in storage and will keep two months beyond that.
