Morgan Sweet

synonyms: The name Morgan Sweet is often used as a synonym for Golden Bittersweet . There is also a Somerset (U.K.) cider apple that uses Morgan as its primary name.
identification: Medium to large size, usually about as high as it is wide, slightly conic and five-sided at the crown. Green changing to lemon yellow when fully ripe, often with a pale red blush on the side exposed to the sun. Marked with light-coloured lenticels, usually large. The stem is short and stout, set in a deep, heavily russetted cavity.
characteristics: Yellowish white flesh, tender. Brisk, juicy and sweet with a distinct fruity aroma.
uses: A very sweet eating apple but primarily used for making an early, light, Somerset-style cider.
origins: There are no documented records of the origins of this variety other than those in the late 1800s which maintain that it was widely grown in the Somerset area of the UK in the early 1700s. The noted British pomologist Robert Hogg lists the Morgan Sweet in his "Fruit Manual" (1884), noting that it has a strong resemblance to the Keswick Codlin but makes no mention of its origins.
