Golden Bittersweet

synonyms: Morgan Sweet. There is also a Somerset (UK) cider apple that uses this as its primary name.
identification: Medium to large, conic, narrowing to both ends, ribbed. The skin is greenish yellow, washed pale red on the sun-exposed face. Patches of russet and scattered russet lenticels. The stem is short and set in a narrow cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured, soft and chewy. Dry, moderately sweet, very sharp and only slightly bitter.

origins: Thought to have originated at Netherton, Devonshire (U.K.) during the mid-1800s. Described by British pomologist Robert Hogg in his 1886 edition of "The Apple & Pear as Vintage Fruits."
