identification: Medium to large size, round to round-conic. The base colour is is pale yellow, over which is a reddish-pink flush that covers roughly three quarters of the surface. Broken stripes of darker red. The calyx is large and partly open, set in a medium deep, narrow basin which is surround by a faintly knobbed crown. The stem is short and stout, set in a deep and narrow basin which may be russetted. The skin develops a greasy feel in storage.
characteristics: The flesh is white, coarse-grained, soft. Juicy, very sweet, tart and aromatic. Bruises easily.
uses: A cooking apple that makes a slightly tart and flavourful, smooth apple sauce. Does not hold its shape when cooked or baked.
cultivation: Vigorous, upright spreading, spur bearer. Precocious. Crops heavily every other year.
cold storage: Keeps four months. The flavour improves after a month or so in storage.
vulnerabilities: Scab resistant in damp locations.
harvest: In the early part of the fifth period. Fruit tends to drop as soon as it is ripe.
