summary: Developed by at the University of Minnesota and released in 2016, this commercial apple delivers the tangy taste of Granny Smith and the juicy sweetness of Honeycrisp in a promising early season cultivar.
identification: Medium tending to large, round to round conic shape. Base colour is greenish maturing to yellow, over which is a bright red wash that cover almost the entire apple. The moderately thick skin can show a slight bloom as the fruit matures. Lenticels are small and few in number. The calyx is medium size ranges from closed to partly open, set in a medium wide and medium deep basin. The stem is ranges from slender to medium thick and is medium long, set in a medium wide, medium deep cavity which can be lightly russetted.
characteristics: The flesh is white, coarse-grained and very crisp. Juicy with the tanginess of Granny Smith mixed with the sweetness of Honeycrisp.
uses: Not recommended for baking, the flesh tends to be too soft.
origins: Developed in1997 by David Bedford and James Luby at the University of Minnesota's Horticultural Research Center in Excelsior, Minnesota (U.S.A.) by crossing MN 1711 with pollen from MonArk . It was officially released to licensed growers in 2016, but some scionwood apparently leaked out to unlicensed recipients prior to that date.
cultivation: Vigorous, upright, spreading. Semi spur bearing fruit on both spurs and shoots.
cold storage: Keeps up to six months in commercial cold storage.
