identification: Medium size, round. The base colour is greenish yellow, over which is a bright red wash and fine red stripes which are most apparent on the shaded face. The calyx is medium size and partly open, set in a medium deep and wide basin. The stem is very short and stout, set in a narrow and shallow cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is greenish white, fine-grained, crisp, firm. Juicy, sharp and very mild flavour.
origins: Developed in 1903 from a cross of
Gascoyne’s Scarlet and
Cox’s Orange Pippin and raised by N.F. Barnes, the head gardener to the Duke of Westminster at Eaton Hall, Chester, Cheshire (U.K.).
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright tree. Spur bearer. Produces heavy crops.
