synonyms: Glory of England, listed as Gascoigne's Scarlet Seedling by nurseryman George Bunyard in his second (1921) edition of "The Fruit Garden."
identification: Large, flat round with a defined, ribbed crown. Pale green background colour, with an extensive deep red flush covering more than half the apple. Sometimes faint striping can be seen.
characteristics: The flesh is white, firm and fine textured, somewhat juicy. Sharp and fruity. Mild flavoured.
uses: Excellent juice apple.
origins: Raised from seed by Gascoyne at Bapchild Court, Sittingbourne, Kent (U.K.) and introduced at George Bunyard's nursery in 1871.
cultivation: Vigorous, upright spreading, spur bearer. Grows exceptionally well in chalky soils.
cold storage: Keeps for three months in cold storage.
harvest: Ripens late in the fourth period.
notes: Makes pink juice.
