identification: Medium to large size fruit, conic, often irregular shape. Green to yellow base colour covered more than half with flushes of orange red and scattered red stripes. Often extensively russetted, sometimes only around the calyx. The skin tends to feel rough. The stem is short and robust.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, coarse-grained, firm and juicy. Rich and aromatic with intense nutty and honeyed flavours. High in sugar and acidity. Sometimes on the sharp side but mellows in storage.
uses: A good eating apple. Also excellent for juice and cider. When used for cider, it should be left to mature in storage for a few weeks. Makes wonderful apple pies and sauces.
origins: Developed by Piet de Sonnaville in 1949 at the Instit voor de Veredeling van Tuinbouwgewassen in Wageningen (Netherlands) by crossing Cox’s Orange Pippin with Jonathan . Introduced in 1971.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, spreading tree. Starts to bear fruit at four or five years. Can be difficult to grow at times but when it does take, this spur bearer crops well. Often bears poorly two out of three years if blossoms are not thinned. Flowers are susceptible to frost. Subject to cracking and splitting as well as preharvest drop in hot growing conditions. Prefers summers that are neither too hot nor dry. Has a tendency to drop fruit prematurely.
cold storage: Keeps for up to four months. Fruit mellows in storage.
