Golden Nugget
type: Eating, Pie, Sauce
identification: Small tending to medium, round conic. Skin base colour is greenish-yellow with broad brick-red wash, heaviest on the sun-exposed faces. Sometimes a network of russet, other times patches, occasionally both. The calyx is small, closed and set in a shallow and wide basin. The stem is short, stout and set in a shallow wide, russetted cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured, crisp and firm. Juicy and very sweet, tangy and intensely flavoured with mellon highlights.
uses: A choice eating apple. Also makes a flavourful, slightly tart sauce and, though small, great in apple pies.
origins: Developed in 1932 from a cross between
Cox’s Orange Pippin and
Golden Russet, American by Dr. Charles J. Bishop, fruit breeder and later superintendent at the Nova Scotia Agricultural Station near Kentville, Nova Scotia (Canada). Released in 1964.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright spreading. Spur bearer.
cold storage: Keeps for two months.
vulnerabilities: Resistant to scab, mildew and canker.
harvest: Ready for harvest late in the fourth period.
notes: Despite its excellent flavour and its versatility, the Golden Nugget failed to make the grade as a commercial apple, mostly because it was introduced on the market at a time when small apples had fallen out of favour and large apples were being sold. Nevertheless, these sell quickly in farm gate sales.
