summary: Freedom shows excellent resistance to scab and most other diseases and produces a heavy fruit load of apples that favoured for fresh eating as well as pies and apple sauces. Also usable for cider for its sugar content and spicy flavour.
identification: A medium to large apple, round in shape. The skin base colour is yellow, covered to about 80% of the surface with red stripes. Abundant light-coloured, small lenticels. The stem is medium long and slender, set in a deep and wide, russetted cavity.The calyx is large and open, set in a somewhat deep and wide basin.
characteristics: The flesh is yellow to cream-coloured, firm, moderately coarse-grained, tender and slightly tart.
origins: Developed by Robert C. Lamb in 1958 at the New York State Agriculture Experimental Station in Geneva, New York (U.S.A.), and released in 1983. The complex breeding process included Macoun , Common Antonovka , Golden Delicious , Rome Beauty and ( Malus floribunda ).
cultivation: Vigorous, spreading tree. Spur bearer. Precocious. Needs to be aggressively thinned after fruit set. Produces a heavy fruit harvest.
