Characteristics: The yellow or red fruit are not considered edible.

Uses: This is an excellent pollinator for other apple varieties, producing large amounts of viable pollen for a one week period from Day 3 through to Day 10.

Origins: In eastern Asia and Japan, possibly a cross between Malus sieboldii and Malus baccata.

Cultivation: Vigorous. Upright spreading, tree with domed crown, up to 5 metres tall. Tolerant to hardiness zone 4

Ploidism: Diploid.

Notes: Widely used in breeding programmes to provide the Vf gene for resistance to apple scab.

Vulnerabilities: Resistance to scab, powdery mildew and fire blight.
