identification: Medium to large, round to round conic with some ribbing on the faces. The base colour is green maturing to yellow, blushed pale orange on the sun-exposed face. The calyx is small and closed, set in a shallow and narrow basin which is ribbed and surrounded by a knobbed crown. The stem is slender and long, set in a deep and funnel shaped basin, surrounded by a patch of russet with rays onto the shoulder.
characteristics: The flesh is greenish, coarse-grained, brisk and mild-flavoured.
uses: Cooking. Makes a creamy, mild sauce.
origins: A cross of
Blenheim Orange x with pollen from
Lord Derby in 1935. This was one of 14 varieties developed by Eynsham, Oxford (U.K.) apple breeder Frederick William Wastie.
