identification: A medium to large conic apple. Skin is smooth and green-yellow background, tending to yellow with a red blush on the sun side.
characteristics: Flesh is firm, juicy and crisp. Very sweet, slightly tart and an intense honeyed flavour. Slow to turn brown after cutting. Stores well.
uses: Good eaten fresh, in pies, added to salads and making sauce. Also a good apple for drying.
origins: A chance seedling likely with derivation. Found growing by Francis Crites as a chance seedling in his Parker Heights orchard, near Wapato, Washington (U.S.A.) in 1968. The orchard consisted of
Stark Delicious ,
Golden Delicious and
Winter Banana trees and it is likely that the Criterion stems from two of these three. It was released in 1973.
cultivation: Hardy, vigorous and spreading tree. Ready for harvest in the middle of the second period. Requires 1000 hours of chill at 45 degrees (USDA Zone 5), but tolerates Hardiness Zones 5 to 8.
