summary: A small, bright red, sweet-tasting and crisp apple. Immune to scab. Well suited to backyard apple tree or even a U-pick operation. Best eaten soon after picking.
identification: Small tending to medium size a. Round and as tall as it is round, no crown or ribbing. The skin is thin and glossy with a yellow-green base colour and red-purple over wash that can cover almost all or all of the apple at full ripeness. No russetting. No waxy or oily appearance in storage.
characteristics: Flesh is yellowish white, crisp, breaking. Fine-grained. Juicy and sweet-tart. Mild-flavoured, somewhat spicy. Can be rather bland when grown in marginal conditions.
origins: One of several varieties developed under the cooperative breeding program of the Indiana, Illinois and New Jersey (U.S.A.) experimental research stations, commonly referred to by the acronym PIR. The original seedling was grown from a 1971 cross created by Rutgers University's Cream Ridge Research and Development Station and subsequently cultivated at the Purdue University's Clark Farm Tract near Lafayette, Indiana. From 1978 on, it underwent extensive testing through the cooperative program as well as in Europe. The direct parentage of PRI 2712-1 is from two experimental varieties which have Golden Delicious , Red Rome Beauty , Melba , Rome Beauty , Edgewood and Crandall in their pedigree.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, spreading tree, often with a dome shape. Bears fruit on the tips. Will overcrop and bear biennially unless pruned. Also requires ongoing pruning to manage branching. Lends itself to backyard or small orchard; not ideal for commercial productions.
cold storage: Will stay fresh for two weeks at room temperature, two months under refrigeration.
vulnerabilities: Susceptible to mildew, cedar apple rust, fire blight. Genetically resistant to scab.
harvest: Ripens late in the second half of the fourth period. Attains its best flavour profile after one month in storage.
