identification: Size is medium to large, round tending to long conic, sometimes lopsided. The base colour is greenish yellow over which is a deep, Burgundy-red wash with the coverage ranging between 80 and 100%. Some darker striping can be discerned at times. Sparsely marked with prominent, whitish lenticels. The skin is tough and thick, yet smooth and glossy.
characteristics: Flesh is pale yellow to cream in colour, medium-grained, firm, crisp and juicy. Sprightly and spicy. The apple tends to be a bit on the tart side when first picked but sweetens after a month in storage. Spicy with a full, rich flavour. However, the skin can be tough and chewy.
uses: Best eaten fresh but because of its rather thick and tough skin, most people prefer the apple peeled.
origins: Developed at the Purdue University’s Horticulture Farm as a seedling created by crossing

at West Lafayette, Indiana (U.S.A.). It was named Enterprise prior to its release in 1993. The purpose of the breeding program was to develop an apple that was disease resistant.
cultivation: A vigorous, spreading, tree. Spur bearer. Produces annually.
cold storage: Keeps up to four months in cold storage.
vulnerabilities: Resistant to fire blight and cedar apple rust. Very resistant to scab. Slightly susceptible to brown rot. Susceptible to mildew. Slightly susceptible to brown rot.
harvest: Ready for harvest in the first three weeks of the third period. Overripe fruit develops a greasy feel to the skin.
