summary: One of about 50 apple cultivars developed under the PRI (Purdue University, Rutgers University and the University of Illinois) programme using Malus floribunda 821 to develop apple varieties that are genetically resistant to scab.
identification: Medium size, tending to large. Round to somewhat round conic. Base colour is pale green maturing to pale yellow over which can be patches of bright red, sometimes burnt orange, on the sun-exposed surfaces. Smooth skin, thick and marked with russet lenticels.
characteristics: The flesh is pale yellow, fine-grained and very firm. Moderately juicy, very sweet and somewhat sprightly. Brix 16.
uses: An excellent dessert apple with abundant sweetness and a level of sprightliness that makes it very refreshing.
origins: A cross of Winesap with PRI 668-100 which has Melrose , Golden Delicious , Rome Beauty and Malus floribunda 821 in its genetic make-up. Developed by the Purdue, Rutgers and Illinois State Universities (U.S.A.) in the 1960s. Not officially released.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, slightly dwarfing tree on its own roots. Slightly weeping branches. Partial tip bearer. Needs to be thinned to maintain fruit size.
vulnerabilities: Immune to scab, highly resistant to cedar apple rust, resistant to powdery mildew and somewhat resistant to fire blight.
harvest: Late in the fifth period. Fruit hangs well on the tree at maturity.
notes: Not released by PRI due to less than perfect flavours, flesh texture and growth habit. Nevertheless the scion wood and budwood is available in from select nurseries and hobby orchardists.
