identification: Medium size, round. Yellow washed red and marked with fine darker red stripes. The calyx is small and partly open, set in a shallow basin. The stem is medium long and medium stout, set in a shallow and narrow, russetted cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is cream coloured. Rather dry. Sweet and somewhat bitter, but mild acidity. Fruity aromas.
uses: Primarily used as a cider apple.
origins: Originated from a seedling of a
Dabinett crossed with
Stoke’s Red , raised by George Spinks in 1947 at the Long Ashton Research Station in Bristol, England.
cultivation: Moderately vigorous, upright compact tree, biennial, precocious.
cold storage: Keeps less than a month.
harvest: Late in the fourth period. The apples tend to drop as soon as they are ripe.
juice character: The must has a high sugar content as well as significant tannin, a touch of acidity. Aromatic. Does well when blended with sharp musts.
