identification: Medium in size, round and slightly flattened, slightly ribbed. The base colour is yellow, washed with bright red over three-quarters or more of the surface, not striped. The russet lenticels are prominent and moderately profuse. Russet can also form in the stem cavity. The stem is long and slender, set in a wide and moderately deep cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is cream-coloured, firm, crisp and and somewhat dry. Not overly sweet, nor tart. Bit on the bland side, with some pear drop flavor present. Sweetens in storage.
origins: A relatively modern apple originating in France. Introduced in 2000 and the first commercial orchards planted in 2002. It was developed in 1979 by Marion Guillou at the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) located in Angers (France) by crossing the experimental cultivars P7R25A27 ( Florina crossed with Priam ) and P21R4A30 ( Golden Delicious crossed with pollen from an unknown variety apparently produced from Japanese crabapple) and subsequently selected in 1988 from among the seedlings produced.
cultivation: The tree is vigorous and somewhat spreading with the fruit clusters developing on spurs close to the main stem. However, old branching needs to be thinned to avoid the production of small apples.
cold storage: Keeps up to six months in cold storage but must be monitored since it occasionally develops storage scald.
vulnerabilities: Bred for resistance to scab. Also resistant to mildew and blight. Rosy aphid can be a problem.
