identification: Small to medium in size and somewhat conic, often lopsided. Ribbed and crowned. The base colour is yellow which is washed to at least half with purplish red. Profusely marked with light-coloured lenticels. Develops a light-coloured, waxy bloom.
characteristics: The flesh is cream coloured, fine grained, medium firm, sweet and low in acid. Buttery and perfumed. Resistant to bruising.
origins: Developed at the Station D'Arboriculture Fruitière, at Beaucouze (France) for the Institute National de la Recherche Agronomique by crossing an experimental variety of Delicious with PRI 612-1 (
Golden Delicious x F2-26829) which carries the scab-resistant genetics of Jonathan/Rome Beauty. Released in 1977.
cultivation: Vigorous, spreading tree. Bears fruit on tips. The tree tends to start producing fruit at about four years and gives generous yields with a tendency to become biennial. Does well on M9 rootstock, or in cases of fertile soil.
cold storage: Keeps up to two months. Becomes soft and loses its flavours in extended or inadequate storage. Some tendanc to develop core rot.
vulnerabilities: Moderately resistant to scab, blight and mildew. Highly prone to rust.
harvest: Ready for harvest at the end of the fourth period and resists dropping well beyond full ripeness.
