no image available
type: Culinary
synonyms: Black Jack, Norfolk Colman, Norfolk Coleman, Norfolk Storing, Winter Coleman. Often called Norfolk Beefing though this refers to a different cultivar.
identification: Medium size or larger, round and flattened at the ends, angular on the sides and ribbed crown. The base colour is greenish-yellow and washed mahogany on the sun-exposed face with a faint reddish blush on the shaded side. The stem is short and stout, set in a deep cavity. The calyx is medium size and open, set in a narrow, shallow basin which is often pleated.
characteristics: The flesh is pale yellowish, firm and crisp. Acidic though it mellows somewhat in storage. Very firm/hard.
origins: Grown since the late 1700s and first listed as the Norfolk Storing by William Forsyth in his "A Treatise on the Culture and Management of Fruit Trees" (published 1803). Later described by George Lindley under the name Norfolk Colman in the 1831 edition of "A Guide to the Orchard and Kitchen Garden in Great Britain" (published 1831).
