Waltana
type: Cider, Eating, Jelly, Pie
identification: Medium to large. Round to round-conic and noticeably ribbed. The base colour is greenish yellow, blushed red and marked with darker striping. Tiny, scattered, light coloured lenticels. On young trees, the fruit can be extensively coloured, while older trees produce fruit that has more background colour showing. The calyx is medium size and closed, set in a shallow, wide basin. The stem is medium long and slender, set in a deep and narrow cavity.
characteristics: The flesh is white, dense and crisp. Juicy and sweet, often with nut and berry flavours.
uses: Bred as a fresh eating apple, but the Waltana is also used for making pies and tarts, for apple jelly and for cider.
origins: A seedling of Waltana , probably pollinated with Manks Codlin , bred by Albert Etter at his orchard and nursery at Ettersburg, Humboldt County, California (U.S.A.) in the early 1900s. Though not highly regarded by him, his younger brother was enthusiastic enough about the variety that he established a small commercial orchard and named the apple for himself and his wife (Walter and Ana), registering a trademark in California to that effect. After Walter's demise in 1946, the orchard was neglected, but the Waltana was among the many varieties restored in 1992 by Ram and Marissa Fishman of Greenmantle Nurseries in Garberville, California (U.S.A.).
cultivation: Vigorous. Produces annual crops but the fruit needs a long, hot summer to fully mature. Can be grown in areas of shorter summers, but the apples can be held in storage to mature before they are edible.
cold storage: Keeps up to three months and can be brought to full maturity off the tree in areas of shorter summers. It has a reputation as one of the best all purpose, long?storage apples.
harvest: Late in the fourth period, sometime early in the fifth. The fruit hangs well at maturity.
