summary: Developed in northwestern United States, the fresh-eating apple lends itself to u-pick and farm-gate sales as well as being a marketable variety.
identification: Medium size, round tending to round conic. Base colour yellow to pale orange, over which is a right red wash and marked with fine, scattered stripes. The stem is slender and somewhat short, reaching to the height of the shoulder. The calyx is closed and upright, set in a ribbed basin.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, crisp and firm. Juicy, sweet with a hint of tartness.
origins: A cross of Splendour and Co-op 15 produced in 1994 by Shawn Mehlenbacher at Oregon State University for the Washington State University's apple breeding programme.
cultivation: Compact, upright spreading growth. Spur bearer. Precocious. Needs to be thinned after fruit set in order to maintain fruit size and to reduce the tendency to biennial bearing.
cold storage: Keeps up to four weeks in cooled storage.
vulnerabilities: Somewhat susceptible to powdery mildew and fire blight. Thanks to the genetic influence of the Co-op 15 parentage, the apple is highly resistant to scab.
harvest: Ready for harvest starting in the first half of the fourth period and generally picked in the course of 10 to 14 days. However, the fruit needs to ripen on the tree in order to develop full sweetness, flavours and juiciness.
