synonyms: Trailman, sometimes listed as Tailman which appears to be an entry error which caused the "r" to be omitted in some texts. Also sometimes confused with Talisman.
summary: A nutty flavoured crabapple bred for cold hardiness but also ripens to a sweet and crunchy eating apple.
identification: About the size and shape of an poultry egg, somewhat larger if the tree is pruned for size. Base colour is gold over which is a reddish brown wash on the sun-exposed face. The stem is very slender and long. Very thin skin.
characteristics: The flesh is creamy yellow. Crisp. Moderately juicy. Sweet, spicy and lightly tart. Nutty flavour.
origins: A cross of Trail Crab with pollen from Osman carried out by Dr. C. R. Ure at Agriculture Canada's Morden Research Station for the Prairie Fruit Breeding Cooperative. Tested and selected at the Beaverlodge Research Station near Grande Prairie, Alberta (Canada). Introduced in 1973.
cultivation: Vigorous, upright spreading but develops somewhat drooping branches with the passing years. Precocious. Produces heavy crops annually.
cold storage: Keeps up to two months in cooled storage.
vulnerabilities: Highly resistant to fireblight. Resistant to cedar apple rust.
harvest: Ready for harvest in the first half of the fourth period with a two week ripening window. Fruit drops when ripe.
