synonyms: The Trail (a.k.a. Bilodeau) was considered a separate but unidentifiable varietal until December, 2022, when DNA analysis matched it with the Trail Crab.
summary: Bred to survive tough winter conditions. The fruit can be grown for eating, jellies and is widely used for cider.
identification: Small tending to medium-sized crab apple. Round, sometimes round flattened. The skin base colour is pale yellow which is extensively blushed orange over which are broken red stripes. Lightly marked with blurred lenticels. The stem is very long and slender, set in a moderately deep and open cavity. A light bloom develops when the apples ripen.
characteristics: The flesh is yellowish, fine-grained, firm and crisp. Juicy, sweet-tart and aromatic. Bruises easily.
origins: Northern Queen crossed with Rideau in 1905 by Dr. William Saunders at Canada Department of Agriculture's Central Experiment Farm in Ottawa, Ontario (Canada). Introduced in 1911.
